Anyone who has traveled to Ireland has seen and will know that
the Irish Dogs roam the streets a lot very unlike most of their American counterparts at least in rural
New England Towns(not all but more than less so.)
.
I'm sure the majority of you reading this will be surprised to know that there is NO
Quarantine bringing dogs from Ireland and the UK into the US. It is easier to get an
Irish Dog across the US borders than for an Irish Person to travel to the
United States.

The cost of flying the dogs from Ireland is approximately 185 euro from Shannon to Boston on Aer
Lingus. That translates into anywhere up to 210 US Dollars.

Ireland's domestic animal situation is far behind American times I realize there are horror stories in
every town and every city of every state. But Shooting unwanted dogs and
drowning puppies and kittens are still wide seen practices there.  And I
guess as an American I find that practice a bit too
primitive and uncaring towards animals. I am not alone. There are now rescue
groups popping up everywhere Ireland in attempts to educate people. There are
huge ads on TV paid for by the English Group ‘THE DOG TRUST’.  Who cover the cost of spaying and
neutering and all first shots for dogs across the UK and Ireland. Something we in America could use
desperately. When in Ireland I volunteer to rescue and foster abused and abandoned dogs.

These are some of  our stories below.

Honky is a Cairn Terrier(same dog as Toto) and Salese
is a purebred English Setter also known as a Llewylen
Setter. Salese was kept by us in Ireland for Two Years
when a good friend in the states was looking for a dog
for her son after they lost their 2 husky's within 6
months of each other. She didn't want a pup and
Salese is a great, gentle dog. She is more stunning in
person and her personality will steal your heart.

Honky went to an older gentleman in Killarney and we
hear he is doing well
.
This is Grissely.
He was rescued on Christmas
Eve from a family who kept him
locked in
a very small dog box. And the
neighbors complained of is
howling. Note the staining on

Lilly was born to a Ewe here in
the states who had a difficult
lambing the year before and
should not have been re bred
by the gentleman who owned her
But sometimes greed
outweighs logic. The pregnancy
almost killed the mother. She
had to be C sectioned, Lilly's twin
Daffodil, died at birth, her
mother rejected her and the
man who bred her didn't have
the patience. So she was raised
by hand by me
and the girls with help from
Maggie the
Saint

Marshfield Fair
Lilly went to a non sheep
eating home. She was at the
Marshfield fair this year and
took 2 blue ribbons.

The Sheep (below)

Snowy, Maisy, Stormy and Mac. The
resident sheep.

Snowy(1) and Stormy(3) are twins
who mother passed away from a
prolapsed uterus. Raised on the
property by hand they are like
dogs. Mac the big guy on the end,
was raised in someone else's
house after his mother passed
away from a pro lapsed Uterus.
Mac lost his twin Brother to
Tetanus at 5 months old.

Apparently the farmer never had
the mother inoculated so upon a
surgical castration Murph
contracted tetanus and passed
away.

Maisy was saved from slaughter
because the farmer was done
farming and sold the flock at a
Meat Auction.

UPDATE: Mac Passed away 8/27/09
6 years and a day after his twin
brother. He died from
complications due to a prolapsed
rectum. No one is really sure what
a large sheeps life expectancy is.
He will be missed, He was the first
here at the Torrey house.

In November 08 we added
Aphrodite and she had a lamb
Annabelle. Look for their story's on
the Sheep page with more info on
the breeds of every one and more
pics.
The Rescue Stories
We re-homed in the US an  Irish
Field Springer, We spent 250 euro
for the dog with no papers to get
him out of the horrifying kennel he
was being housed in by what is
known as a Puppy Broker.

They buy sell and trade dogs as a
hobby and for the cash. They don’t
care about the dogs and they look
for a quick turn over.  Lucky was
lucky to end up with the horrible
conditions he was in when we
found him because most field dogs
who don’t make the cut
as hunting dogs will end up being
shot and left to rot in a field by the
hunter who can’t be bothered to
re-home the dog.
Happy to Report Lucky is living
large in Easton Now.
USA Dylan

This is Dylan a 7 Year old Shar Pei Mix.
We were in NY for a going away party for a friend going to
Afghanistan.
Somehow the topic of my trips to Ireland came up and I was
asked what I did when I was there. I stated I volunteered at
fostering and re-homing Dogs.
Someone piped up and asked me to take Dylan cause his
owner couldn't take him to her new living arrangements and
was headed to a kill shelter.
With a face like that who could say no.

Dylan is the official greeter here at the Torrey House.
Again if you don't love animals this is not the Inn for you.

Dylan is a great boy.
He is still looking for a forever home.
He gets along great with the border collies but they confuse
him with their silly herding games.

Dylan was well cared for by his owner. However it has become
apparent he has some anxiety. It is manageable through
training but medication helps.

He is an off leash dog. You can take him to a beach or park
and he doesn't go far.
He greats people here at the B and B . He loves to snuggle. He
loves car rides.

He is excellent on a leash.

He is a fabulous companion dog.

I will not re-home him with small children though I have my
own small children

He is fine with the sheep.

He was with a single woman.

I believe he would do best with an older couple with older or
out of the house kids though he tolerates my sisters 2 year old
well, I wouldn't recommend it for a life choice for him.

He would not do well being left in a kennel often.

If you are interested in Dylan please contact US.

If I have him for the rest of his life it wouldn't bother me in the
least. However I think he would best enjoy more one on one
time with someone who can give it to him.
Charlie and Maggie
They were not rescues.
We got Maggie in 1999 while living in Ireland.
She was born to IKC Champs and from direct English Stock closest to the Original Swiss Stock.
She passed away August of 2008 at 10 years old.
She survived a tumor and a Tor
qued Stomach that resulted in stapling.
Maggie wasn't a stranger people lover but was great to all the animals and people on the Property.
She WAS NANA from Peter Pan.
She will be missed but lived a full life.

Charlie
was who we were looking for when we stumbled across Lucky.
We had an all black dog, Bud, an English Springer Spaniel x Black Lab growing up.
My oldest daughter wanted to find a dog who looked like bud.
So for her birthday in Ireland we set out to find a "BUD"

Charlie with out the white is a dead ringer. But I didn't want exact
(not a fan of cloning, its never the same)
Charlie is a lovely Dog. Great personality. He lives at my dads and comes to visit
here at the B and B.
Because he is so awesome My Uncle has Hijacked him and takes him everywhere with him and
refuses to return him

He lives "the life" between the two homes. Who can deprive him of that.
